I miss having a day where I can sleep in and do absolutely nothing. When was the last time I got to do that... hmm... *looks at calendar*
Might have been the beginning of June. Even then, I can't be sure.
So, Friday was the big fireworks day (aka Fourth of July, Independence Day). That's when we have our annual church picnic. I used to get asked to help run the Shave Ice Booth, but no one contacted me about it, so I figure they had enough people working it. I ended up getting there around 10am... and proceeded to drive around Kapi'olani Park for an hour, trying to find parking (what a waste of gas).
Saturday was supposed to be laundry and relax day, but instead, I decided to go to the Aloha Stadium Swap Meet (used to be called the Aloha Stadium Flea Market... not sure when they changed their name). A friend of mine in California had asked me to pick up some things for her because getting them in California costs a ton more. This may sound strange, but I ended up asking Pat if he'd like to join me, so he went along.
I was able to find the hair clip flowers she wanted, but the slip-on dress thing (to wear over bikini when going to the beach?) was more expensive at the swap meet than at the International Market Place, so I decided to go to Waikiki (here's where Maile starts whining for me about parking).
We found parking at the Honolulu Zoo parking lot, which is 25 cents per hour, so it wasn't bad. We walked over to the International Market Place and found the slip-on dress things for cheaper, even with them charging tax.
We ate lunch at IHOP, then headed back to the car. We felt like we needed to take advantage of such a great parking space, we went to the Honolulu Zoo.
I think I've seen new things in that zoo each time I've been there the past 10 years. This time, they had a new (or relatively new) area for the orangutan Rusty, and his girlfriend (or girl friend?), Violet.
We saw some primates
African Savannah area:
The tortoises were all kind of trying to escape some of the heat... most of them had dug holes in the ground and stayed there.
After the zoo, we went home. I still had laundry to do. Once I started up the laundry, Mike and I watched the season finale of Doctor Who. It was a good episode, but I was sad at the end. I won't ruin it for anyone who watches it on the BBCAmerica.
Sunday was Bayfest. I have way too many pictures to sort through, so I will post that later on... or you can check out my Flickr account later. I'll try to make sure I upload them soon.
Bayfest was great. We went early to see what the carnival side was all about.. which basically meant we ate the horrible-for-you-but-oh-so-yummy carnival foods. Actually, now that I think about it, I didn't really eat anything fancy... I had a cheese pizza and curly fries. We took the little Coconut Island tour (aka Gilligan's Island, and no, it wasn't a 3-hour tour), and then headed for the stage area.
Everclear went up at 7pm. I'm not a huge fan, but I do like a few of their songs. Mandy and I squeezed our way to the front and got some pretty good pictures. Mandy has a story, but I told her she should tell it on her Vox. Go read it there later.
Live went up around ... 8:45? something like that. Everclear decided to play one last song and invite a ton of girls onto the stage with them, so it took a long time for them to get off the stage. I haven't seen Live perform since May 2001, out in the backwater town Houma, Louisiana. The Houma show was great, but it was so nice to see Live again. Ed Kowalczyk has such a presence on stage... very alive and charismatic. Watching Chad Taylor jumping around on stage, stomping his feet, just so much fun to watch. Patrick Dalheimer with his mostly calm, collected self on bass. Chad Gracey, whom I could barely see from the way the stage was set up... right on it, but some sound guy decided to turn up the bass drum mic from the third song. That was annoying, but I lived through it. I seriously wanted to yell up to the stage and say "the bass drum is too loud!" but I refrained.
The place was very crowded. Being up front was madness, but not as bad as I thought it would be. I wasn't getting squished, even though there were a lot of people trying to squeeze into spaces, pushing their way closer to the front. I always like to try to get some nice pics of the drummer (drummers seem to be neglected in photos, since they're usually way in the back), but even with Gracey's drumset moved forward, it was right in the spot where there was a pillar and I couldn't really get any pics of him.
(okay, I couldn't resist... I'm gonna put up a couple pics from the concert)
Wow... July already. Damn, time is going by fast.
Loathing:
- people! and their horrible driving!! Just last week, a 54-year-old man was killed when he was clipped by another vehicle in a merge (the driver of the other vehicle apparently didn't see him, but at the same time the 54-year-old man didn't slow down when his lane was merging into the other lane). I was almost hit by someone switching into my lane because I just happened to be in their blind spot and they didn't bother looking. Come on people... this is elementary driving rules.
- not having a weekend. I have to admit, it was exciting and all, but I was so exhausted after the whole thing. There wasn't any real time to relax this weekend.
- Puka likes Mike more than me.
- Mike throwing shit around when he's mad. Yeah, for those who know Mike but don't know him THAT well... you don't see his angry side. He starts swearing non-stop and will throw things. it's not fun.
Loving:
- the end result of the busy weekend. We did our Swap Meet Sale on Sunday (and preparations on Saturday), and we raised a good deal of money for our Concert Fund. Next project: Ala Moana Center Stage performance, with possible t-shirt sales and/or donations.
- Doctor Who. It's coming to the end of the season, which is sad, but it's pretty damn exciting. Quite a bit of suspense... can't wait to see what happens in the season finale!
- Captain Jack Harkness in the Doctor Who two-part season finale! Need I say more?
- Bayfest on Sunday. Everclear and LiVE coming to perform. I'm not a huge Everclear fan, but I used to be a huge LiVE fan. Not as much now, but the one concert in Houma, Louisiana is still fresh in my memory as one of the best concerts I've seen. There's gonna be quite the photo opp.... and Mandy might be able to get backstage passes. not sure yet, but still hoping to get it :)
- designing the Hawaii Gagaku Society 40th Anniversary t-shirt.
We're going to be placing an order very soon. Anyone out there want to order one? They will be sold for $12. The front left chest image is my dad's signature drawing, what he uses when he writes to friends and family.
- not sticking to a strict diet, yet keeping weight regulated. I couldn't stick to the 11 Day Diet while working the Swap Meet... it was just soooo crazy. I'm still keeping the complex carbs to a minimum.
I haven't felt the need to write anything recently. We had a Rock Band Party on Saturday, of which I have PICTURES this time. Last time, I felt too busy to even get out my camera. There was too much food, as usual, and then we had to force the last people to take home plates of food. I also have a lot of ice cream in my fridge now, hah. It's hard to give away ice cream... it melts.
